日常に入り込んで来た「すこし・不思議」な要素と恋愛話を軸に、主人公たちの心と身体の成長が描かれている。
単行本は、ちゃおコミックスより、1期〜4期が1巻〜4巻、0期が「ないしょのつぼみ-めばえ-」として刊行されている（2008年5月現在）。同じタイトルに巻数（0期の単行本のみ「-めばえ-」）が付く形式だが、1巻と「-めばえ-」を除いてそれぞれの巻に連続性はなく、主人公の名前がつぼみでありテーマが共通しているのみである。なお、雑誌掲載時のタイトルはいずれも"ないしょのつぼみ"で、副題や期数表記などは一切付いていない。
2005年4月、単行本第1巻発売時にAmazonやセブンアンドワイなどのネット通販などで特に男性層に爆発的に売れ[1]、一般週刊誌などでも話題となった。
2007年12月現在での累計発行部数は55万部[2]と、学年誌に掲載された女子向け漫画の単行本としては異例な売上げを見せている。
アニメ
0期の初版帯で、アニメ化の企画が2008年の春を目指して進行中であることが明かされた。1期を元にしたOVAが全3巻で発売予定。
Naisho no Tsubomi (ないしょのつぼみ, Naisho no Tsubomi?)|Secret Tsubomi is a shōjo manga authored by Yuu Yabuuchi, and published by Shogakukan. As of 2008, 3 volumes have been released in Japan. An OVA anime for the series was released on the 24th of April, 2008. A second OVA episode will be released in June, 2008.

Naisho no Tsubomi is a critically acclaimed manga that tells the story of Tsubomi Tachibana, a fifth grader dealing with rather sensitive issues such as her mother's pregnancy, her first period and the strange feelings she has started to get when she has been around boys.

Tsubomi Tachibana: A fifth grader who deals with sensitive issues while growing up. She is happy about her mother's pregnancy. She is troubled about lot of things like that strange feeling that she has around Nemoto, the "indecent things" that they parents have done to make a baby, her feelings towards Saya when she gets close to Nemoto, She is just a girl dealing with growing up issues.
Saya Endo: A beautiful new student in Tsubomi school and her classmate. She nows lots of things and is a friendly character. She gets along with Tsubomi since the beginning of the story and helps her with her problems. She seems more mature than the rest of the kids of the same age, She has a secret conection to Tsubomi.
Daiki Nemoto: He is Tsubomi neighbor and friend of Futoshi and Yuu. He helps Tsubomi to relax when she was going to see her mother and gives her a . He is nice and popular with girls(even older ones). He starts to have feelings towards Tsubomi, and realized them after they secretly saw Yae and Yuu kissing.
Yae Yamabuki: She is tall, slim and calm. She is one of Tsubomi best friends adn her nick name is "Yae-chin". She is troulbed by buying bras and her flat chest. She likes Saegusa and starts going out with him in chapter 5 and they kiss in chapter 9.
Rea Kato: She is little and hyperactive and corious about perverted stuff. She is one of Tsubomi friends and Futoshi's childhood friend too. She is teased by Futoshi a lot and that's makes her want to be slim and beautiful. Her nick name is "Rea-Pi".
Yuu Saegusa: He is quiet, very popular and considered "the class idol". He has an older sister that helps Yae about her problems. He likes Yae and becomes her boyfriend in chapter 5, but they keep it a secret because lots of girls wil be jealous.
